The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art
5.04.2008

"Bill Reid is one of Canada’s greatest artists of the 20th century. Goldsmith-turned-sculptor, carver, writer — he was truly a renaissance man. In a long career, he embraced many art forms, driven always by a passion to create the “well made object”. This passion, combined with a gradual discovery of his rich Haida cultural heritage, informed and inspired his development as a visual artist of tremendous power and brilliant accomplishment."

--the Bill Reid Foundation

On Tuesday, May 6, 2008, the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art will open with a Ceremonial Dedication. Haida Chiefs and Councilors will be in attendance giving an acknowledgment of welcoming onto Coast Salish territory, as well as a presentation of gifts to the Coast Salish delegation of Chiefs. Other notable speakers will be on-hand from the Government of Canada, the Province of BC and the City of Vancouver.

Waxy Photography, who is collaborating with the Foundation to cover the event, will be in attendance for the festivities. The closed-door ceremony and media-preview will take place at the new
Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby St. in downtown Vancouver, Canada (see map). The exhibition, entitled "Bill Reid: Master of Haida Art," opens to the public on May 10, 2008.

Exposure Gallery: Street Photography Exhibit
4.22.2008

You may know the names Fred Herzog, Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham and Roy Arden, all of which got their photographic start in Vancouver. While these greats have moved to the big league, and big museums, the rich history of photography in Vancouver continues at small, local galleries which feature new talent alongside the more established. Exposure Gallery is one such place.

With that, it is my honour to invite you to the upcoming Street Photography exhibit at Exposure Gallery. The group show is entitled "Street: Reportage, Documentary." I'll be showing several prints along with more than 40 other talented Vancouver Street shooters.

Exposure Gallery
754 East Broadway, Vancouver (map)
Opening Night: Friday, May 2, 2008 at 8 pm
Exhibit Dates: May 2 to May 18, 2008
Gallery hours: Thurs - Sun from noon to 5 pm

I hope to see you on opening night!

STRANGER: Photography Exhibit
3.26.2008

I have organized a group photography exhibit at Radha Centre in downtown Vancouver during much of April:

STRANGER: A photography exhibit of strangers and unfamiliar landscapes. The work is a diverse mix of the abstract, the dreamlike, and the street. Photographers include Marc L'Esperance, Lung Liu and John Goldsmith.

Opening Night is Friday April 11, 2008 from 6:30-8:30pm. The exhibit runs from April 10 – April 26, 2008 with restaurant hours of Thursday – Saturday from 6-10pm. Radha Centre is located at 728 Main Street in Chinatown (see map).

Alongside the photography exhibit, opening night features a live acoustic jazz duet by Shannon Thue and Joel Kerr.

If you wish, you may RSVP on Facebook.

I hope you can make it to opening night!

Waxy at Yaletown Gallery
2.12.2008

It's 2008 and that means it's a leap year. That's right -- a free day for everybody! So why not kick the winter blues and make a celebration out of it?

The Yaletown Gallery's Landscape of Vancouver exhibition runs from February 29 - March 14. Along with other Vancouver photographers, I will be showing a framed print from my Street Photography collection. I expect that the exhibit will have quite a variety and views of Vancouver -- and maybe even some you haven't seen before.

Yaletown Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the historic Yaletown District of downtown Vancouver, Canada. It is located at 123-1208 Homer St (at Davie). Opening night for the Landscapes of Vancouver exhibit is on Friday, February 29th from 7:30 - 9:30pm. Please stop by and say hello!

Stock Photography: On Demand
1.23.2008

Beginning in 2008, Waxy Photography began using Photoshelter's platform to distribute stock photography for both new and existing clientèle. Waxy Photography already provides stock imagery of Vancouver and beyond, but this simple platform makes shopping Waxy's stock catalog a snap since photographs are available with just a few clicks of a button.

Waxy's stock photography already appears on a number of websites including Metro Vancouver and Conde Nast's webzine, concierge.com. The library collection contains work for both editorial and contemporary art uses which primarily show Vancouver's urban scene and Street Photography, along with images from my travels. The imagery available will continue to expand as I transfer my library and collect new photographs.

If you don't see something that strikes your fancy on Photoshelter, please contact Waxy with your particular needs since the Photoshelter collection contains only a small fraction of my stock portfolio. Waxy Photography is available for commissioned projects as well, which are finely tailored to each customer's needs.

Please visit my my collection.

WAXY IN JPG MAGAZINE
12.06.2007

What's new? How about issue #13 of JPG Magazine?

In this issue, my photograph called "Painting Oneself Into a Corner" was selected by the online community and the JPG editing staff to appear in the "Tools of the Trade" theme. The image was captured in Vancouver's West End neighborhood and is viewable in my Street Photography portfolio.

JPG Magazine is a high quality photography magazine distributed throughout the US. It can be found in many bookstores, including Borders and Barnes and Noble, and is available by subscription, which currently numbers 18,000 as quoted in the New York Times.

To find out more, visit JPG Magazine and download a preview of issue #13. While you're there, please stop by and say hello. By the way, the painter's t-shirt says: "I'm a Keeper." I'm glad the editors at JPG think so too.

Streetside: Published in Photosho Magazine
9.16.2007

In the next days, Photosho Magazine is going to press and Waxy is a featured contributor. That's right! In an 8 page spread of 14 photographs and over 2000 original words, the article entitled “Street Photography: Playing Cat and Mouse in the Urban Theatre,” looks at my view of Street Photography, including some story telling, a brief history of the genre, and tips to help you take better photos. The magazine will appear in stores across Canada this October but you can pre-order now for savings.

In celebration of the event, I am offering a 20% discount on all prints from now until the end of November. You may choose from those in my gallery or my photostream on Flickr. Please see the price list (pdf) and slash 20% off framed or unframed art. Prices begin at $40 for an unframed 8x10” print (see sample print). Just email me with your order and specify the print size and whether you want it print only, print + matted, or print + matted + frame. I will then verify your print order and shipping details. It's that easy!

Also, take a look at Photosho Magazine which makes for a great coffee table read. If you pre-order a copy, Light Leaks Press is offering a savings of $3.60 from the list price. I have a previous issue with one of my published photos and I can tell you that the print quality is second to none—full colour, 60 pages, perfect binding, with heavy paper made with sheet-fed printers. The issue is themed rural / urban and features many other talented photographers and writers stretching across Canada. Don't take my word for it -- check out the Photosho website and order your own copy.

Waxy prints are on sale now, so get 'em while they're hot! When November ends, these shady prices will retreat like a shadow into the night.
